Eddie Wachtel and Alice Kemper were married in 1934 at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Siberia Indiana. The church was three miles from the Kemper farm. The "Home" page photo was taken in the yard of the farmhouse of Alice's parents. It was on Indiana Hwy 62 about seven miles east of Saint Meinrad.

Father - George Frederick Wachtel b. Feb 26, 1877, Louisville, Ky. d. 8/28/1958 Shively, KY. He was the son of Josephine Wachtel. There are no marriage records for Josephine and she is listed as single in census records. Josephine was the daughter of Martin and Magdalena Wachtel from the Alsace-Lorrain area of Germany/France who emigrated to the U. S. in 1854. Our Wachtel surname has passed down through the maternal line of Josephine. * Note - The father of George F. Wachtel was discovered by JoAnne Perronie on Sept 18, 2020. --- The father of George F. Wachtel is Adam Hoertz 1858-1906. Mother - Maria Elizabeth Tuchscherer b. 8/30/1882, St, Meinrad, Indiana. d. 10/12/1955, Shively Ky. She was the daughter of John Tuchscherer b. 1850 in Pittsburgh, d. 1932, Ferdinand Indiana and Anna Catherine Mehling. b. 1857, Indiana d. 1912, Ferdinand Indiana. George Wachtel and Elizabeth Tuchscherer were married June 6, 1905 at St. Mary Magdalen Church, 815 S Brook St. in downtown Louisville, Ky. They lived most of their married life at 3948 Dixie Highway, Shively, Ky. Behind the family house was a large candy shop. Behind the candy shop was a chicken house and a large garden. George was a candy maker and salesman for a novelty company that belonged to his uncle or cousin. He suffered from T. B. and spent about a year at Waverly Hills Sanitarium near Valley Station. Elizabeth loved flowers and had a large flower garden. They attended St. Helen's Catholic Church and their children attended the parish grade school. They are buried at St. Andrews Cemetery. - George Moody, (1906-1976). Wife was Edith Foster, (1908 - 1993). George worked as a printer and Edith was a bookkeeper. After retirement George and Edith sold their Beechview Court home in Shively and lived in a cottage in Paynesville Ky on property owned by Joe and Estelle Hayes. No children. - Estelle Josephine, (1908 - 2003). Husband was Joe Hayes, (1909 - 1994). They lived on Auburn Drive in Shively and owned the Joe H. Hayes Electric Company. No children. - John Edward, b. 1912 d. Feb 11, 1974. Wife was Alice (Elizabeth Marie) Kemper, b. 1911, d. Jan. 24, 1990. Eddie worked at Kiray's Grocery before marriage and then at Honey Krust Bakery as a deliveryman, and Falls City Brewing Co. Alice worked in the cafeteria of St. Helen's School - 4 children > Donald Edward b.1935, Charles Bernard 1939-2004, Gary Allen b.1945, Mary Paulette 1953-2022. - Elizabeth Adelaide, (1914-1990) - Husband was Albert Weyler, (1915 - 1991). Elizabeth worked at Brown Forman Distillery, Al retired from Seagrams Distillery- 1 child, Elissa, b.1933, worked many years at Churchill Downs. - James Maurice (1918-1985). Wife was Thelma Muessle (1918 - 2010). After his time in the army in World War II, Jim returned to his life long job at Western Electric. He was transferred to Nashville in 1954- 4 children > Cheryl Elizabeth b.1942, James Maurice Jr, Mary Lynne and Joy Anne b.1959. - Adelbert Paul, (1916-1920), died April 11, 1920 at 3 years in chicken house fire where he was playing with matches - Georgette was stillborn, Sept. 19, 1920. (1920 was a sad year for the Wachtels) - Richard Kenneth (1924-1989). Wife was Margaret (Pat) Leatherwood, 1927-2014. After time spent in the Navy in World War II, Rich was a long time employee at the U. S. First Street. 1900 - George Wachtel 23, and sister Adelaide, 21 are living with their unwed mother Josephine at 1035 E. Breckinridge St. George worked as a candy maker. 1900 - 1905 George and Elizabeth met, maybe at a church function? They lived around a dozen blocks apart. 1905 - George Wachtel 28 and Elizabeth (Lizzy) Tuchscherer 23 are married June 3, 1905 at St. Mary Magdalen Church, 815 S Brook St. in downtown Louisville. 1906 - Their first child, was born on March 14, 1906 and was named George Moody Wachtel after her ex-employer. 1910 - George 33 and Elizabeth (Tuchscherer) Wachtel 27 and their two children, George 4 and Estelle 1, are living with George's mother, Josephine 52 at 1515 Christie Ave, Louisville. 1912 - Elizabeth's mother, Kate Mehling Tuchscherer 55 dies on September 11 at St. Meinrad. 1916 - George's mother Josephine 59, dies of a skull fracture in an auto accident at 2nd and Oak on December 29. 1917 - George Wachtel was working at the Bradas and Gheens candy company at Floyd and College Streets. He and family were laterter living at 3948 Dixie Hwy in Shively KY. |

Father - Bernard Anthony Kemper (1870, Ferdinand, Indiana. d. January, 1946. He was the son of John B. Kemper from Germany and Carolina Vonderheide of Indiana. Mother - Sophia Josephine Pauline b. March 9, 1879, Fulda Indiana. d. July 18, 1952 in Louisville Ky. She was the daughter Richard Paulin b.1834, Ranspach, Alsace, France d.1882, Fulda, Indiana and Agnes Schlachter b. 1839, Ohio d. 1901 Siberia, Indiana. The 9 children of Ben by his 2 wives, Maria Reutman* and Josephine Paulin.
Bernard (Ben) Kemper and Mary (Maria) Reutman (1876-1906) were married on May 24, 1898 at Ferdinand. They had 2 children. - Ida Caroline (1899-1992) never married. She was a bookkeeper for Wessels Hardware in Shively. - William H. (Bill) (1905-1977) of Melbourne Florida. Wife was Eunice Hudson (1910 - 1996) 1 child, Carl Kemper (1940 - 2005). Bill and the family did not have much contact. *First wife, Maria Reutman died at 30 in 1906. She was the daughter of Henry b 1844 and Elizabeth (Wessel) Reutman b 1854 of the Jasper Ferdinand area of Indiana. After the death of his first wife Maria, Ben married Josephine Paulin of Siberia, Indiana on April 16, 1907 at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church Siberia, Indiana. They had a 100+ acre farm on Indiana Highway 62, 7 miles east of St Meinrad at the Anderson River (a creek here) crossing They won prizes for their sorghum. They had 6 children. They attend St. Martins Catholic Church at Siberia, Indiana where their children attended the school. The church was 3 road miles from the farm and around a 2 mile walk cross country that the kids took to school. - Veronica Theresia (Verona) (1908-1981) never married. She was a long time housekeeper for Mr and Mrs Ferd Weis in the Louisville Highlands. First on Spring Drive and later the Commodore Apartments on Bonnycastle. They owned Weis Outfitting Co.. - Hermena Marie (Irma) (1909-1999) never married. She was a supervisor for The Kentucky Macaroni Factory (Delmonico Foods) on Floyd Street across from the now Papa Johns Stadium. After her retirement, the owners, the Vivianos, always remembered Irma on her birthday and Christmas with presents. Even the grandson, Joe Viviano who became president of Hersheys. - Elizabeth Marie (Alice) b. April 15, 1911. d. January 24, 1990. Husband was Eddie Wachtel. For several years, she worked in the St. Helen's School cafeteria.- 4 children, Donnie, Charley, Gary and Paulette. (See John Edward at left) - Otto Robert (1913-2010) Otto ran the Family Farm on Indiana Highway 62 about 7 miles east of St Meinrad. After Interstate 64 bisected the farm and it was sold he worked in maintenance at a Catholic Parish in Huntingburg. He was a director and Township President of the Farm Bureau and a director and president of the Perry-Spencer Rural telephone Co-op. After his retirement from farming he did custodial work at St. Jude Catholic Church at Indianapolis, Indiana and later at Holy Family Church Catholic Church and School in Jasper. Later in life he married Rula M. Timms, on November 5, 1983. Rula died in July, 2003 from an auto accident. - Henry Leo (1914-1994) never married. He worked on the farm and for a rubber company (?) in Jasper or Huntingburg. Henry was in the Army in World War II. - Sophia - stillborn, November 4, 1916 - Hilda Louise (1919-1979). Worked at Delmonico Foods on Floyd Street till married. Husband was Thomas Hamilton Merimee (1908-1982) who worked at home as an engraver. - 2 children, Elaine, Eddie. |
