When researching the genealogy of parents, the search normally proceeds through the male and female lines. In the case of the Wachtel/Tuchscherer marriage, the research must be from both female lines because the Wachtel name has been derived from the female line of the mother. The name of the father of George F. Wachtel is unknown. There is no record of Josephine ever being married. Her two children, George and Addie, were given her Wachtel family surname. George was born in 1877 and Addie in 1879 so Josephine had at least a 3 year relationship with the father. see note below*
* Note - The father of George F. Wachtel was discovered by JoAnne Perronie on Sept 18, 2020. --- The father of George F. Wachtel is Adam Hoertz 1858-1906. After his affairs with Josephine Wachtel, he married Elizabeth Belzer b.1861 in 1882. Adam was a masonry contractor. His 3 brothers George, Jacob and Fred were major masonry contractors and political figures in Louisville in the first part of the 20th Century. Josephine Wachtel filed suit and won judgements for support which was approved but she did not receive this support and filed another suit but the outcome is unknown.

Edward Schaefer purchased three cemetery plots when Josephine died. They were for Josephine, himself, and Addie. After Addie died and Edward remarried, he gave his grave site between Josephine and Addie to the cemetery for re-sale. The person buried there is Eugene Rileggi 1881-1940 and is not a relation. Edward purchased two new sites in Calvery Cemetery for himself and his second wife. Josephine's grave had her name added in 2021 for $240
The children in the following are all I could fine using free sites. Cheryl has found 12 children for Martin and Madeline
The following genealogy line follows the maternal line of Josephine Wachtel because it was created before it was discovered that Adam Hoeltz was the father of George Wachtel in September, 2020. The Adam Hoeltz ancestors follow.
It seems that most all of our Wachtel/Tuchscherer ancestors come from the Alsace region of France with a few from the Pfalz (aka 'the Palatinate') wine growing area of Germany directly north of Alsace. The Bas-Rhin noted in the genealogy is a department of Alsace, France meaning Lower Rhine. Climbach is a community in that region.

This is a sampling of census reports and other documents regarding Josephine and George. Wachtel has been misspelled in some.
1900 Census Report that shows Elizabeth (Lizzie) Tuchscherer living with the George and Laura Moodys as a servant. This was at 1301 S. 1st Street. Elizabeth's first child in 1906 was named George Moody Wachtel. Being from St Meinrad, one wonders how she came upon that job.
This certificate is for George Frederick Wachtel's first communion, June 16, 1889. The heading in German says "Memory of First Holy Communion" . This was at St. Martin of Tours parish at Shelby and Gray St. It continues as an active parish with parishioners from 40 zip codes.
Martin and Magdalena Wachtel immigrated to Louisville in 1855 and may have wondered what they were getting into. August 1855 was the date of what is known as "Bloody Monday" when mobs attacked German and Irish Catholic neighborhoods, one attack was at and around St. Martins.
